Check numeric matrix and polynomial results

Prepare matrices and coefficient lists, then use substitution and convergence checks to assess a numeric answer.

A compact matrix or coefficient list can represent substantial work. An apparently precise decimal does not replace checking the input format, model and numerical limits.

Prepare dimensions and equations

Matrix multiplication requires A’s column count to match B’s row count. A system solver instead needs an augmented row per equation, with its right-hand side after the coefficients. Gaussian elimination uses partial pivoting and rejects singular or ill-conditioned systems instead of inventing a unique result.

Preserve missing powers

Polynomial coefficients run from highest power to constant. Include zeros: x²−4 is 1,0,−4. Horner’s method evaluates the list without running a typed expression. Check a simple value first, such as x=3 giving 5, before relying on a more complicated coefficient set.

Check results independently

Substitute a system’s reported values into the original equations and inspect residuals. For Simpson integration compare a larger even interval count. The rule is exact through cubic polynomials in exact arithmetic, but higher degree and floating-point rounding need attention. No symbolic proof or certified error bound is provided.

Worked example

Scroll the table horizontally on small screens to see every column.

Verify a two-variable solution
EquationAt x=2, y=1
2x + y = 52×2 + 1 = 5
x − y = 12 − 1 = 1

Substitution checks a solution against the original equations without removing floating-point limitations.
